Thanks for having me. I started the company in 2019 with two friends and about $4,000 in savings. For the first year we built everything on weekends.

The turning point was March 2021. We had 300 paying customers, and one of them asked if we could do the same thing for video. That question became our main product.

If I had to give one piece of advice, it would be this: talk to your users every week, even when it feels uncomfortable.

What is video to text conversion?

Video to text conversion, also called transcription, turns the speech in a recording into written words. The audio track is separated from the video, a speech recognition model listens to it, and the result is a plain text transcript. Nothing about the picture is used, so a video and its audio give the same text.

How to convert a video to text

  1. Upload your video. Drop the file into the upload box at the top of this page, or choose it from your device. MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and AVI all work.
  2. Pick the language. Leave it on Auto detect, or choose the spoken language if you already know it.
  3. Press Transcribe. The speech is converted to text with punctuation and paragraphs.
  4. Download the .txt file. Copy the text or save it. It opens in Word, Google Docs, Notes and any text editor.

How to convert audio to text

Audio works the same way as video. Upload an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC file and you get the same clean transcript. Voice memos from iPhone and Android are usually M4A or AAC, and voice notes from WhatsApp and Telegram are OGG or OPUS. All of them are supported.

Tips for a more accurate transcript

  • Record close to the speaker. Distance and echo lower accuracy more than anything else.
  • Keep music and background noise low while people are talking.
  • Avoid people talking over each other when you can.
  • Choose the language yourself if a recording mixes languages or starts with silence.
  • Check names, brands and numbers before you publish. They are the words most often misheard.

Transcript, captions or subtitles?

FormatWhat it isBest for
Transcript (.txt)All spoken words as plain text, in paragraphsNotes, articles, quotes, search
Captions (.srt, .vtt)Short lines of text with timestampsShowing text on top of a video

This converter creates transcripts. A transcript is the best starting point for anything written, and you can turn it into captions later.
