WAV is uncompressed audio, so it keeps every detail of the recording. That makes it a very good input for speech recognition, especially for interviews and research recordings where every word matters.
The only downside is size: a minute of stereo WAV is about 10 MB. Files up to 500 MB and 15 minutes work here. Mono WAV files are half the size and transcribe just as well.
